California settlers massacre 70 Tolowa Indians and burn down the Tolowa village of Howonquet. A posse of settlers also massacre 450 Tolowa in Yontoket during their ceremonies and burn their rancheria to the ground. Still another posse of White settlers massacre, at dawn, an estimated 65‒150 Tolowa Indians at their village near Lake Earl (“List of Indian massacres”).
